Toxic Mattresses can cause SIDS, is co-sleeping safer

Anthropological and developmental studies indicate that mothers and babies are biologically and psychologically made to sleep together in the same bed, not only to breastfeed but also to nurture them during the night. Since the first ever baby was born, babies have always slept with their mothers – babies aren’t meant to sleep divided from their mums, alone in a different room.

Nowadays, so much fear is instilled in mums not to co-sleep because of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). 90% of SIDS cases occur in infants under 6 months of age. Did you know that SIDS has only been a common occurrence since the 1950’s? This is when fire retardants and various chemicals started being used on mattresses and when the VACCINES given to infants started to increase (as they still are today!)

Since the 1950s, the typical baby/child/adult mattress materials has been replaced with cheap, petroleum-based synthetics. Near enough all mattresses today contain polyurethane foam, vinyl (PVC), phthalates, chemical fire retardants, petroleum based chemicals, and formaldehyde – as well as a host of other added industrial chemicals. Studies, for a while now, have been coming up with findings seriously questioning the safety of these materials.

Babies, children and adults can become ill by continual exposure to the low level of chemicals given off non-stop whilst sleeping. Babies are especially susceptible to these chemicals. Concern is mounting among physicians, health professionals, environmental advocacy groups, public safety officials, as well as consumers because of the possible effects of these chemicals on our children. Many researchers suspect toxic chemicals have a significant role in the dramatic increase in SIDS and childhood disorders.

The use of lead paint was once widespread before being recognised as toxic and banned. Same as this, many components of today’s baby mattresses are also toxic – currently these chemicals are still legal, though they are likely to be eventually banned as well. The sooner the better.

Babies and toddlers spend around 10-14 hours a day sleeping and playing on mattresses. Thus, the first months and years of their life’s, the mattress is the most used object in a child’s environment. Their every breath means they are breathing in these chemicals.

However, there are always alternatives – there are natural ORGANIC cotton based mattresses out there. Co-sleeping benefits are immense, greatly enhancing a baby’s emotional and physical well-being and when safe co-sleeping guidelines are adhered to, SIDS rates for co-sleeping babies are far lower than for babies sleeping alone in cots, separated from mummy.

Some doctors and researchers believe that during co-sleeping, the physiological regulation of the baby’s breathing and heartbeat with the mother’s makes co-sleeping safer in relation to SIDS.

A study done in the laboratory of James J. McKenna, Ph.D. of co-sleepers, 2 to 4 month olds, reveals that breastfeeding mums and their infants are highly sensitive throughout the night – throughout all sleep stages – to the movements and physical condition of the other. Mothers sleeping with their babies can easily respond to any changes in the baby – such as if it were choking or having trouble breathing.

CAUTION: consuming large amounts of alcohol/drugs impairs this ability, and can then cause SIDS.

If you co-sleep, make sure you make a safe sleeping space for your baby

Harmful Parabens, Carcinogens and Preservatives in Baby Products

Not just baby products, also products aimed at adults… We MUST Protect Babies – and ourselves – from dangerous ingredients in every day skin care products…..

Shortly after birth mums start the regular routine of lovingly washing their babies brand new skin, with a wide range of baby products including shampoo, soap, shower gels, body lotions and talcum powder. Sometimes several times a day.

BUT – how would you as a parent – or relative for that matter – react when/if you found out that these products are often a nasty concoction of dangerous ingredients? You would go mad is probably the best answer!

The most disturbing of these ingredients can be categorised in to 3 groups. Their use is wide-spread. They are known as hidden carcinogens. These are ingredients that are contaminated with carcinogens, or which break down to give off carcinogens. Infants are about 100 times more sensitive to these than adults.

The biggest group of hidden carcinogens includes dozens of detergents or wetting agents, especially LAURETHS, PEGs and CETEARETHS. These are all polluted with the potent and easily released carcinogens ethylene oxide and dioxane. LANOLIN (also known as woodwax ester, wool alcohol, adeps lanae, aloholes lanae, lanolin hydrous, lanolin anhydrous, wool fat, wool wax, wool grease, glossylan, golden dawn, nodorian, sparklelan) is derived from sheep’s wool and another HIDDEN CARCINOGEN- most samples of this are POLLUTED WITH DDT like PESTICIDES. The sad thing is that these carcinogens could easily be removed during manufacture – if the effort was made!

The second group includes TRIETHANOLAMINE (TEA) which is also a detergent. Following interactions with NITRITE this produces a HIGHLY POTENT NITROSAMINE CARCINOGEN. TEA is listed under Schedule 3, part B of the Chemical Weapons Convention as it can be used in the manufacture nitrogen mustards.

The 3rd group includes DIAZOLIDINYL and QUATERNIUMS UREA PRESERVATIVES that break down either in the product or when in contact with the skin releasing the CARCINOGEN FORMALDEHYDE. DIAZOLIDINYL is also known as * Germall II * Diazolidinylurea * Urea N-(1,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,5-dioxo-4-imidazolidinyl)-N,N’-bis(hydroxymethyl)

Another group to be concerned about is a widely used group of PRESERVATIVES known as PARABENS. Many studies have been conducted in the last 10 years proving them weakly estrogenic. They bring about ABNORMAL HORMONAL EFFECTS after being put on the skins of infant rodents, particularly males. TESTOSTERONE LEVELS were decreased as well as UROGENITAL ABNORMALITIES. Parabens have also been found to AMASS in the breasts of women with BREAST CANCER. Widely used parabens include methylparaben (E number E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216) and butylparaben. Less used parabens include isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben and their sodium salts.

TALCUM POWDER is still used widely in spite of CANCER WARNINGS – based on rodent testing this can CAUSE LUNG CANCER. Also the INHALATION of TALCUM POWDER can cause ACUTE OR CHRONIC LUNG IRRITATION and DISEASE (TALCOSIS), OVARIAN CANCER, SKIN CANCER, even DEATH. In 1993, a US National Toxicology Program report found that cosmetic grade talc caused tumours in animals

FRAGRANCES which have many ingredients are often used in baby products – but only for the parents benefit! The downside is that more than 25 of these are KNOWN TO CAUSE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS.

Another widely used ingredient of HIGH concern is SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (also known as SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE * DODECYL SODIUM SULFATE * STEOL -130, 230, 270, 330, 370 or 460 * STEPANOL * ALKYL ETHER SULFATE * SODIUM POE(2) LAURYL ETHER SULFATE * SODIUM DIETHYLENE GLYCOL LAURYL ETHER SULFATE * SODIUM LAURYL ETHER SULFATE. NOTE: they WILL try and trick you into buying their products with these DANGEROUS INGREDIENTS under different names!!!). Just one application to the skin of human adults has proven to DAMAGE the skins microscopic structure, amplifying the penetration of CARCINOGENIC or other TOXIC INGREDIENTS.

Products containing the above mentioned ingredients in the last paragraph, can affect those prone to eczema and other irritants. These substances give the product a foaming quality, allowing for better distribution of the product while washing hair or body, and whilst brushing teeth. Once rinsed off, the product will have cleaned the area but will have taken moisture from the top layers of skin. In people with sensitive e.g. prone to acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and chemical sensitivity, the drying property of this kind of detergent can cause flare-ups of skin conditions or may worsen existing conditions. Believe it or not these are also found in the popular brands of snack foods. And also in ORGANIC PRODUCTS. Just because something is organic, does not make it safe. ALWAYS CHECK INGREDIENTS BEFORE PURCHASING. EDUCATE YORUSELVES – FOR KNOWLEDGE PROTECTS AND IGNORANCE ENDANGERS.

The most worrisome fact is that there are readily available alternatives for these highly toxic and dangerous ingredients out there! Why have the multi-billion cosmetic and toiletry industry not done anything to counter this? Easy – the main priority of the industrys trade association is to ‘protect the freedom of the industry to compete in a fair market place’. At the same time an extremely aggressive agenda is followed against what is claimed as being ‘unreasonable or unnecessary labelling or warning requirements. Once again we can see here – profits are FAR more important to these people than their fellow humans health.
